PortTango is proud to support the Tango Digital Archive, an initiative by the non-profit organization, TangoVia Buenos Aires, to preserve the history of tango by digitizing recordings, photographic and graphic materials before they are lost forever.
Much of the material to be recovered is unique, vulnerable, and irreplaceable. Records break. Every day. A small domestic fire or a broken pipe could mean the irreversible loss of unique handwritten scores or photos stored in a box in someone’s attic. Already, more than 3000 tango recordings are known no longer to exist anywhere.
We must safeguard what remains. UNESCO recently declared tango an “intangible cultural heritage of humanity.” The creation of this digital archive is not a luxury; it is a necessity.
